Pricy but incredible quality, freshness and selection.
Best I've ever experienced. Sadly it's closed
Best sushi (focus on nigiri) in Chicagoland. Listen to the chef and his wife, they care about pairings without upsell, but based on taste!
Service 2.0/5, atmosphere 3.0/5, food 4.3/5, value 3.0/5. Went to check this place out before they close their doors for good. Staff was friendly, but it took 2 hours before we got our nigiri. The fish itself is fresh, tasty, and nicely presented however the pieces are so large it is almost impossible to eat the nigiri in a single bite. The rolls we tried contained too much wasabi making it difficult to eat. The atmosphere wasn't anything special and it was half empty when we were there (even though we needed to make reservations 2 weeks in advance). The four course tasting menu is a decent portion size for many (not quite enough for me though) but the food is overpriced. Don't expect to pay less than $150 per head. I found that I can get similar fish quality and better overall experience at Ora sushi. Glad we tried this place (otherwise I would have always wondered) but will not return. Still need to try are arami and Juno.
Excellent sushi, chef Katsu and the staff serve with highest quality and warmth. I do not think this is an expensive place if you think of the service you receive with high quality sushi/sashimi
Katsu is hands down the best place for sushi in Chicago. If you look outside of Chicago for comparison in my mind it is superior to the places I have been to in NYC.Haroku and Katsu are incredibly kind and humble, which makes the experience of dining with them that much more special.
The fish was good, the atmosphere was also good. However the prices are a little hard to justify. The mushroom soup was like $14, it was small and only "fair". For a $14 soup, it needs to be amazing.
So sad to see this gem close.
Fantastic sushi at a decent price. It's never packed. They are also open pretty late.
I had some really good sushi here.I ordered the omakase sushi 12 pieces (chef's choice).I got yellow tail, salmon, white tuna (torro), tuna, squid, shrimp, sea urchin (uni), oyster, tuna tar tar sushi, crab, scallop, and mackerel. I liked them all except for the squid (not a big fan of squid as sushi). These were not your typical sushi as most of them came with a slight addition to add a little flavor, usually a roe but some had a little sprout or leaf to go with it.The only reason it's not five stars is I didn't think it was worth the price.I thought the sushi would have been better without any of the frills/additions and just served as straight fish. Roe and truffles and gold foil is expensive to add on sushi and it would bring the cost down and just be the great flavor of the fish.
The service was good. The nigiri was great! The rolls we got we okay, minus the Hakata roll that we were warned had a strong flavor...and it was quite strong for us. We were impressed by the freshness, but not wowed by the rolls, not because we weren't given enough food though! They gave huge piece of nigiri; granted we did pay a decent amount!
excellent food, the best sushi ever had! especially it is prepared by authenticate Japanese chef. Their prepared cooked food items are very good as well.
Excellent fresh sushi, blue tuna, salmon and scallops very fresh, taste perfect. Also had a great saki Goriki perfect blend with the food ordered. Everyone at the table enjoyed the dishes ordered. Nothing bad at this restaurant. It is the best sushi place in Chicago.
Delicious!
An amazing gem in Chicago. This restaurant is at the top of my best Japanese food in Chicago. Thank you Katsu and Haruko.
Incredible sushi. Incredible staff
Best sushi restaurant in Chicago. Totally under the radar which is what makes it awesome. You get what you pay for. Big sashimi pieces!
Amazing staff and food. Just go.
amazing presentation and quality of service! The chef coming around with his wife to greet diners was a fantastic touch
So wonderful. Now closed. We will miss Katsu!
The quality was good but it was expensive. If you go to this place it is very likely that you cannot get what you pay.
I've known this restaurant for many years. The owners are so nice, and the food is just amazing and they have a great selection on sake and other alcoholic beverage. It is pricy but it's a "Must Try"!
Went on a Saturday night without a reservation and we were surprised to be seated right away. However, they did warn us that the Sushi would take about an hour and a half to make but good company always makes that a non-issue. I liked the authenticity of this place but was really shocked when they denied our request for wasabi. I totally get the chef's justification for this but it seemed a little hypocritical since they were still allowing us soy sauce, which in my opinion would overpower the quality or freshness of any sushi grade fish. Can't complain about the taste or the atmosphere but straight out denying a paying customer wasabi was a little off beat for us.
Best sushi anywhere! Chef Katsu uses outstanding ingredients and turns them into stars. You won't find fancy sauces here, but everything is beautifully displayed, and you taste every ingredient and the masterful combinations of flavors. It is quite expensive, but you expect to pay high prices for the highest quality. If you want to taste pure and authentic Japanese cuisine at its best and aren't afraid of the bill you'll rack up, Katsu is a must. As far as I am concerned, it's the best restaurant in Chicago!
One of the best sushi restaurants in Chicago. Amazing.
Unlike any other sushi restaurant you'll ever experience. Authentic to the max. Why, Mick Jagger and Tom Hanks have eaten there!
Super fresh sushi, well worth the price. This is the place for connoisseurs.
The sushi is the best I've ever had in Chicago. The fish is so fresh and the japanese food is real authentic. Definitely try the sushi tasting menu and daily speical
This is by far the best and the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Chicago. If you crave for real Japanese sushi, and not the "westernized" Maki rolls, you won't miss it. The only downside is its location, but it won't deter the ernest.
One of the most authentic sushi places in Chicago. Great fish and great service. Slightly pricy but worth it
Best sushi in town!!! Catch it before Katsu retires and closes at the end of November 2017 if you can.
This is an excellent sushi restaurant. Very authentic and the owners are hands-on and attentive. You can get cooked Japanese food so there is something for everyone. The rolls and nigiri are fresh and delicious.
Best sushi experience in town, bar none. It is pricey, but totally worth it. Go for the omakase: chef's tasting. Let the chef select for you. Omakase features what's freshest and most unusual. Very authentic. Delicious and a must!
Best sushi I have had in this country, Katsu is master Sushi chef. If you want the finest, freshest, most elegant presentation, you found your place. Even better than the crazy NY sushi place my investment broker took me too a couple years ago, and that was about 1K per person.
Cooked entrees are great here
Walked in with my wife and 2 kids at 6 pm on Friday to a restaurant with only one table seated and were told they don't have high chairs and they weren't sure if they could even get us in without reservations, in their almost completely empty restaurant. We won't be back.
Amazing. Worth the price of admission.
